On which night does the Night of Qadr fall on?

Answered by: Sheikh Zafar ul Hasan

All scholars agree that the Night of Qadr is in the last Asharah (10 days) of Ramadan, particularly the odd nights of the last ten days.

The Odd Nights of the Last Asharah:

Hadith:

Narrated  by Ubada bin As-Samit: Prophet of Allah  صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم  came out from his house  to inform the people about the (date of the) Night of Qadr but there happened a quarrel between two Muslim men. The Prophet صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم  said: I came out to inform you about (the date of) the Night of Qadr, but as so and so and so and so quarrelled, its knowledge was taken away (I forgot it) and maybe it was better for you. Now look for it in the 7th, the 9th and the 5th (of the last 10 nights of the month of Ramadan).

Sahih Bukhari :49

21st Night:

Meaning of the Hadith:

Prophet  صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم said: This Night (of Qadr) was shown to me but then its knowledge was taken away (I forgot about it). You should seek it in the (odd nights of the) last Asharah. (In my dream) I saw myself prostrating in mud.

Then on the night of 21st, the sky was covered with clouds and it rained. The rain water seeped through the roof of the mosque at the praying place of the Prophet  صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم .

Sahih Bukhari :2018

23rd Night:

Hadith:

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Unays al-Juhani: I asked Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم : I have a place in the desert where I live and in which I pray, with the praise of Allah; but tell me about a night when I can come to this mosque. He  صَلَّى  اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم  replied : Come on the twenty third night. I ( Muhammad ibn Ibrahim) said to his (Abdullah ibn Unays's) son: How would your father act? He replied: He used to enter the mosque when he had offered the Asr prayer, and did not leave it for any purpose till he had prayed the Fajr prayer. After the Fajr prayer, he would go to his ride (tied) at the door of the mosque, mount it and return to his abode.

Abu Dawood:1380

25th Night:

Hadith:

…….Search for it on the (night of) twenty-fourth (fast of Ramadan).

Sahih Bukhari:2022

27th Night:

Hadith:

Narrated by Abu Huraira: Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم  said about the Night of Qadr: It is either the 27th or 29th night (of Ramadan). On this Night, the number of Angels that descend on Earth is greater than the (number of all the) pebbles (on the Earth).

Masnad Ahmed: 4050

29th Night:

The Even Nights of the Last Asharah:

Some of the Hadith Scholars say that the Night of Qadr would arrive in reverse,i.e. it should be counted backwards from the 30th night. It might even fall on an even night. That is why Prophet of اللّه صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم , his companions and Salaf did not single out any specific night out of the last Asharah (10 days). Instead, they worshipped Allah fervently during the entire last Asharah.

In the last Asharah of Ramadan, Prophet  صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم used to pray all night long and used to wake up his family (for worship), too.

Dua For The Night Of Qadr:

Hadith:

Ayesha asked: O Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم ! If I find the Night of Qadr, what should I say (in supplication)?

Prophet  صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم said: Ayesha, you should recite the dua:

اللھم انک عفو تحب عفوا فعف عنی

Ibn Majah: 3850

Things to Do:

  • Instead of selecting a specific night, we should follow our Prophet’s sunnah and worship fervently in the entire last Asharah of Ramadan. If not possible, at least make sure to follow the sunnah of worship in the last five odd nights of Ramadan.

Benefit: In this way, we would be able to reap in the rewards for following the sunnah, as well as  get the Night of Qadr, whether it falls on an odd night or an even night.

Many other duas can be recited other than the above mentioned duas:

  • For the Protection from Hell Fire
  • For forgiveness
  • For Acceptance of all your Ibadah
  • For the Protection of your health, family, wealth and business etc.

We should especially make dua that May Allah Protect us from this tribulation (disease) and eradicate it completely. May Allah revive the former glory of Muslims. May the Muslims populate the mosques once again. Make dua for yourself as well as Muslim Ummah.
