While fasting in Ramadan, we should constantly monitor ourselves to see if we have been able to achieve the main objective of fasting.

What is the main objective of fasting?

Allah Mentions in Al-Baqarah:

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous (2:183)

Allah Mentions in Ali-Imran:

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous (3:133)

This shows that attainment of TAQWA should be our goal.

Attributes of Muttaqeen (doers of good):

Some attributes of Muttaqeen have been mentioned in Quran by Allah SWT. We can consider ourselves successful if we are able to inculcate these attributes.

The six attributes of Muttaqeen mentioned in Ali-Imran, ayah 134-135 are:

۔ الذین ینفقون فی السراء و الضراء

Who spend [in the cause of Allah ] during ease and hardship

والکاظمین الغیظ

And who restrain anger

والعافین عن الناس

And who pardon the people

والله يحب المحسنين

And Allah loves the doers of good

والذين اذا فعلوا فاحشه او ظلموا انفسهم ذكرو الله

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allah

ولم یصروا علی مافعلوا

And [who] do not persist in what they have done

Second Attribute of Taqwa:

To restrain your anger, as anger is the cause of many vice and evil.

Third Attribute of Taqwa:

To pardon other people, to not reciprocate evil with evil, to forgive and to forgo revenge.

Ayesha (Radi Allahu anha) said that she had never seen Prophet (Sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) take revenge on his own behalf.

In an another narration, Ayesha (Radi Allahu anha) said that in his entire life, Prophet (sallalahu alaihi wa sallam) did not reciprocate evil with evil.

Fourth Attribute of Taqwa:

To carry out "Ihsan" (doing good) as a part of worship, only to seek the Pleasure of Allah is also an important virtue of Muttaqeen (doers of good). A person should not only treat one's own self with Ihsan, but also all other creations of Allah.

Fifth Attribute of Taqwa:

Repenting and begging for forgiveness whenever a sin is committed; remembering Allah with fear (that He would punish us) and hope (that He would forgive us)

Sixth Attribute of Taqwa:

Not insisting on sins; Committing sins fearlessly and stubbornly is not a virtue of Muttaqeen.
