Clearing Misconceptions: Are the virtues of Ramadan divided during the month?
“When the first night of the month of Ramadhân comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist. And Allâh has those whom He frees from the Fire, and that happens every night.”
[At-Tirmidhî, Ibn Maajah and Ibn Khuzaymah - Classed as Hasan by Shaykh Al-Albânî]
A very common misconception that prevails in the Indian sub continent and widely circulated is that: Ramadhan is divided into three parts with each part having ten days. First ten days, known as First Ashara, are for the Mercy of Allah, the next ten days, known as Second Ashara, are for the Forgiveness from Allah and the rest of the ten (or nine) days or Last Ashara, are for emancipation from the fire of Hell.
Each Day and Night of Ramadan offers all the three virtues
Because of this widely spread unauthentic statement, many people get lethargic for the first twenty days of Ramadhan and hope to make a quick recovery in the last ten days and get qualified for being emancipated from the Hell.
Read the above Hadith again and not five things mentioned in it
- The devils and rebellious jinn are chained up.
- Gates of Paradise (mercy) are opened.
- Gates of Hell closed.
- A caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist from sins
- Allah sets frees many people from the Fire.
This offer is right from the first night of Ramadan's till the moon is sighted for Eid because the Prophet (peace be upon him) concluded, "and it happens every night."
The only advantage that the last ten nights have over other nights is the presence of Laylatul Qadr in one of the last five odd nights. As far as the rest of the virtues are concerned the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself has testified that it happens every night.
So grab this opportunity of receiving mercy, forgiveness and getting emancipated from Hellfire and it is to be tried on each day and night of Ramadan.
