Islam makes it a requirement for couples to behave with each other with respect and love. Let us go through a few Islamic etiquette for couples and check out if we apply it in our marital lives or not.
Patience is an important etiquette for couples to establish a happy family. For physical and emotional togetherness patience and tolerance are highly recommended. Allah commands kindness towards wives and assures of Khair through it.
O you who believe! you are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness, that you may take away part of the Mahr you have given them, unless they commit open illegal sexual intercourse. And live with them honourably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good.
Communicate with each other openly and honestly.
And say to My slaves (i.e. the true believers of Islamic Monotheism) that they should (only) say those words that are the best. (Because) Shaitan (Satan) verily, sows disagreements among them. Surely, Shaitan (Satan) is to man a plain enemy.
No matter how tired you are upon returning from the office, make a point to smile and be cheerful because it is sunnah to meet a Muslim cheerfully.
Adopt pardoning and forgiving
Forgive each other’s mistakes and shortcomings.
And let not those among you who are blessed with graces and wealth swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kinsmen, Al-Masakin (the poor), and those who left their homes for Allah's Cause. Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Even if you do feel wrong on their part you should adopt a pardon says the Qur’an:
O you who believe! Verily, among your wives and your children there are enemies for you (i.e. may stop you from the obedience of Allah), therefore beware of them! But if you pardon (them) and overlook, and forgive (their faults), then Verily, Allah is oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
Be hygienic, neat and tidy
Many people are careless about personal hygiene which causes irritation for their spouses. Brushing teeth before wudhu, shaving of armpit and pubic hair, and avoiding food that emits a foul smell from the mouth are a few highlighted acts that please Allah too.
They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they have purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allah has ordained for you (go in unto them in any manner as long as it is in their vagina). Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers, etc.).
Cover each other’s faults and shortcomings
Caring couples will correct their spouses in private and defend their honor in public, unlike uncaring couples who backbite and expose each other’s shortcomings before friends and relatives. The spouses are compared to garments because garments cover and hide many defects on our bodies and uphold our modesty.
It is made lawful for you to have sexual relations with your wives on the night of As-Saum (the fasts). They are Libas [i.e. body cover, or screen, or Sakan], for you and you are the same for them.
Address each other with affection
The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to address Aisha as “Aish” and also “ My wife in this world and Hereafter.” When Aisha used to call upon Allah she used to say, “ O Lord of Muhammed!” (Peace be upon him)
Help each other in Birr and Taqwa
Do not encourage your spouse to speak ill about any of his or her relatives or friends. Co-operate with him or her if they are doing anything that pleases Allah.
Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not Help one another in sin and transgression. and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.
Drag them to Jannah
Spouses are supposed to care for each other with regard to even Akhera.
O You who believe! Ward off from Yourselves and Your families a Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, over which are (appointed) angels stern (and) severe, who disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allah, but do that which they are commanded.
Display love and affection regularly
Love each other unconditionally for the sake of Allah. Any act that is done for the sake of Allah is a blessed act.
When two Muslims love each other just for the sake of Allah, He loves them both
Now without wasting a moment, display love and affection towards your spouse and be blessed.
